Missions Committee Report Back
Tuesday 27 June, 7pm
An informative night was held here at BayWest, which outlined
the direction of the church of the future and some practical steps that BayWest
would be pursuing.
BayWest's Synod representatives
David, Jill, Chris, Richard and
Aaron all attended Synod on the 26th - 28th of May. Here, the Diocese
introduced a new piece of legislation called 'Faithfulness in Service'.
This document comes to us from the National Synod, and covers the professional
standards expected of clergy and others involved in leading ministry. No
doubt some training will come shortly.
The Synod also considered revamping the way diocesan assessments
are calculated; new legislation will be introduced next year.
Jill spoke to the members of Synod at the Sunday morning worship service and encouraged
members of Synod in
our ministry in this diocese.
Chris presented a report on the state of youth ministry
in the diocese. Whilst the news in the report was far from good, the
members of Synod agreed that youth ministry needed to become a focus of the
church in Tasmania and requested that the Bishop set up a working group to
examine what the next steps should be in reaching a generation of unchurched
young people.

At Aaron's first Synod, he made a speech concerning
'Global Warming' and its importance. He pointed out that we need to be
aware of the catastrophic effects this problem could have on our environment and
our ability to be out in the world doing mission.
It was a very challenging time, and all who attended were
encouraged to rethink everything, from how we think of the Gospel, to how
we more effectively reach out into our local communities.
A DVD copy ($10) of the presentations or an audio CD ($8) will
soon be available for purchase. If you are interested in buying a copy

Spirituality Forum
We invited representatives from four religions to participate
in an open forum where they answered a series of six questions. The forums
sparked a lot of interesting conversations and left many people asking serious
questions about God. The forum was held at five venues ranging from the
town hall and UTas to local schools.
